How to Draw and Inject Compounded Semaglutide (GLP-1 Medication) Safely
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Wash and Sanitize Hands
Always begin by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Dry them completely to avoid contamination.
-
Clean the Vial
Take an alcohol prep pad, open it, and clean the top of your vial.
Clean the Injection Site
Use the same or a new alcohol pad to clean the area on your body where you will inject.
-
Prepare the Syringe
Use the syringe type prescribed (commonly a 0.5 mL insulin syringe, 31-gauge).
Remove the protective cap.
Draw the Medication
Turn the vial upside down and hold it firmly between your thumb and finger.
Insert the needle into the vial.
Pull back slightly past your prescribed dose (e.g., if you need 10 units, draw to 12). This helps remove air bubbles.
Push the plunger back until the syringe shows your exact prescribed dose.
-
Select the Injection Site
The most common site is the fatty area around your belly button (within 3 inches).
Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation.
Inject the Medication
Pinch a small area of fat.
Insert the needle straight in (subcutaneous injection, no need for angle adjustments with a 5/16 inch needle).
Push the plunger fully until the syringe is empty.
-
Withdraw the Needle
After waiting 2 to 3 seconds, gently pull the needle out.
Put the cap back on the syringe.
Address Any Bleeding
If there is a small amount of blood, do not be alarmed.
Use an alcohol pad on the injection site and gently massage the area with your thumb for 10 to 15 seconds.
